The earthquake occurred at around 9:00-10:00 pm on March 24, 4th year of the Koka Era (May 8, 1847), with its epicenter in what is now Zenkoji Plain in Nagano Prefecture. Its magnitude was 7.4. The public viewing of the main image of Zenkoji Temple had begun on March 10, and 7,000-8,000 good men and women from all over the country had gathered around Zenkoji Temple. Fires broke out immediately after the earthquake, and it is said that only about 10% of the people survived. More than 40,000 landslides occurred, and the soil from the landslide on Mount Kokuzo blocked the Sai River, creating a lake more than 30 kilometers long that reached the Akashina area of Azumino City today. However, on April 13, the soil that had been blocking the lake broke, causing flooding in the downstream area. At the time, the Sanada clan had anticipated this happening and had taken measures, so it is said that the death toll from the flood was only about 100 people. The affected areas extended from Iiyama in the north, Inariyama in the south, and Omachi in the west. A total of over 13,000 houses collapsed. A northeast-southwest fault line appeared near present-day Nagano city, stretching 30 kilometers in length with a drop of 2.4 meters, causing the northwest side to rise relatively. 規模はM7.4。
