A unique autobiography that tells the story of a vagrant's life in a distinctive style. The author was Katsuzaemontaro Koretora (commonly known as Kokichi, pen name Musui, father of Katsu Kaishu). It contains a preface written in 1843 (Tenpo 14). It is an interesting book that vividly depicts the life of a lower-ranking Shogunate official at the end of the Edo period, but it was not published by Kaishu or by Katsu himself during his lifetime. It was introduced to the world in a serial in the magazine "Kyu Shogunate" and included in the 9th volume of Kaishu's Complete Works published by Kaizosha, but it contains many misreadings, and subsequent publications have continued to contain the same errors. The handwritten version is in the possession of Togawa. [Matsuura Rei] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
