The city is located at the southern tip of Miyagi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the mountainous area in the upper reaches of the Shiroishi River, and at the confluence of its tributaries, there is a town that developed as a castle town of the Katakura clan during the Edo period. It is served by the Tohoku Main Line, the Shinkansen, and the Tohoku Expressway, and is the commercial center of the southern part of the prefecture. It was once known for its specialty paper fabric. It is also known for its hot noodle (woomyen) production, silk-reeling, and kokeshi doll making, and field farming is practiced in the mountainous areas. It is home to Kamasaki Onsen and Obara Onsen, and is the southern base for tourism in Zao. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 286.48 km2 . Population: 37,422 (2010). 宮城県南端の市。1954年市制。白石川上流域の山地を占め,諸支流の合流部に,江戸時代片倉氏の城下町として発達した市街がある。東北本線・新幹線,東北自動車道が通じ,県南部の商業中心地をなす。かつて特産の紙布で知られた。温麺(ウーメン)製造,製糸が盛んでこけし作りでも知られ,山間部では畑作農業が行われる。鎌先温泉,小原温泉があり,蔵王観光の南の基地でもある。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。286.48km2。3万7422人(2010)。
