Myokosan - Myokosan

Japanese: 妙香山 - みょうこうさん

It is the main peak of the Myohyang Mountains in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula, with an elevation of 1,909m. The Myohyang Mountains are the western branch of the Nanrim Mountains, and form the border between South Pyongan Province, North Pyongan Province, and Jagang Province. Mt. Myohyang is located at the junction of these three provinces, and its lush, vegetated mountain form is one of Korea's famous mountains. It is home to the Dangun Cave, said to be the birthplace of Dangun, the hero of Korea's founding myth. Bohyeonsa Temple at the foot of the mountain is an ancient temple that was built during the Goryeo Dynasty, and is counted among the five great temples of Korea, with over 40 buildings of various sizes. This temple produced many monks, including Hyunjeong (Seosan Daesa) and Samiyeong Daesa, who became leaders of the righteous army that rose up against the Japanese invasion at the end of the 16th century.

朝鮮半島の北部，妙香山脈中の主峰で，標高1909m。妙香山脈は狼林山脈の西側支脈で，平安南道と平安北道･慈江道の境をなす。妙香山はこの3道の接点に位置し，樹木がうっそうとした山容は秀麗で，朝鮮の名山の一つとされている。朝鮮の建国神話の主人公檀君の生誕地といわれる檀君窟がある。山麓の普賢寺は高麗時代創建とされる古寺で，大小40余の建築物からなる規模は朝鮮五大寺の一つに数えられる。ここからは16世紀末の日本軍侵略に抗して決起した義兵の指導者となった休静(西山大師)，泗溟大師らが輩出した。
