Russian painter. Born into a priest's family. He studied at the St. Petersburg Academy from 1868 to 1875, and moved to Moscow in 1878 to join the Abramtsevo school. He went beyond simple genre painting, and realistically depicted fantasy worlds through ethnic legends, folk tales, and heroic epics, creating a new style of folk painting. He painted works based on Russian folk tales such as Alyonushka (1881) and medieval Russian heroes The Three Brave Warriors (1896), and was also active in a wide range of stage set and costume design. ロシアの画家。司祭の家に生まれる。1868‐75年ペテルブルグのアカデミーに学び，78年モスクワに移り，アブラムツェボ派に加わる。単なる風俗画の域を脱し，民族的な伝説や民話，英雄叙事詩を通して空想の世界を写実的に描き，新しい民族画を興した。ロシア民話から《アリョーヌシカ》(1881)，中世ロシアの英雄《三人の勇士》(1896)などを描き，舞台装置や衣装のデザインでも広範な活動を行った。【浜田靖子】
