A perennial plant of the legume family, native to eastern Asia. In Japan, it grows in slightly moist grasslands on Honshu and Kyushu. The stem is erect, about 50 cm tall, has narrow wings, and is triangular in cross section. The leaves are pinnately compound with stalks and 1 to 3 pairs of broad linear leaflets 6 to 8 cm long, which end in tendrils. In early summer, it produces several slightly large, reddish-purple, butterfly-shaped flowers. It is beautiful, similar to sweet peas.
