Arabic for "those who give help." When the Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina (Hijra), the people who migrated with him from Mecca were called Muhajiroun, while the Arabs of Medina who helped Muhammad were called Ansar. The Arabs of Medina were divided into two tribes, Aws and Khazraj, but after this they were united as Ansar. They played almost no important role politically in the development of the Islamic state, but their help to Muhammad during the formative period of Islamic society was significant, and their descendants took pride in their lineage and called themselves Ansari.

「援助を与える人々」を意味するアラビア語。預言者ムハンマドがメッカからメジナに移住したとき (ヒジュラ ) ，メッカから彼とともに移ってきた人々をムハージルーンと呼び，これに対して，メジナのアラブでムハンマドを助けた人々をアンサールと呼んだ。メジナのアラブはアウスとハズラジの2部族に分れていたが，これ以後はアンサールとして一つにまとまっていった。彼らはイスラム国家の発展過程で政治的にはほとんど重要な役割を果さなかったが，イスラム社会の形成期にムハンマドを助けた意義は大きく，彼らの子孫はアンサーリーと称してその家系を誇った。
