Apron - Apron (English spelling) apron

Japanese: エプロン - えぷろん(英語表記)apron
Apron - Apron (English spelling) apron

This refers to an apron or front flap. There are various types, ranging from knee wraps for protection and waterproofing to highly decorative ones seen in ethnic costumes. Among all clothing, aprons can be said to be the most archetypal garment, and simple ones can already be seen among prehistoric peoples and ancient Egyptians. In the early period, leaves, bark, and animal skins were used, but in the historical period, leather and cloth became common.

It was after the 16th century that aprons became an integral part of the dresses of upper class ladies in Europe. In the 17th century, they became popular as an element of formal women's clothing, and high-quality materials such as lace were chosen, and some aprons had diamonds, pearls, and other precious stones set into the embroidery or edging. The 18th century was the heyday of decorative aprons, and the most ornate example was the silk apron used by Marie Antoinette, decorated with lace, ribbons, fresh and artificial flowers, and pearls. In modern times, aprons that place more importance on practicality rather than decorativeness are more prevalent, but fun designs that add excitement and dreams to daily life are also desired and enjoyed. The shape and size are also related to the fashion of dresses of the time, especially the length and shape of the skirt.

The word's etymology comes from the Latin mappa, meaning napkin (a cloth for covering the dining table), which entered into French as nappe, became napron in Middle English, and then evolved into an apron.
