The capital of the 10th region in south-central Chile. Population 122,399 (1995). It is an important distribution center for agricultural and livestock products and timber in the region, and fishing is also thriving. Founded in 1853, many German immigrants settled in the surrounding area. Although it is 1,080 km from the capital, Santiago, it is connected by rail and the Pan-American Highway, and is a base for tourism in the lake region. It is also a gateway to the island of Chiloe on the opposite shore, with frequent travel between the two islands. [Hosono Akio] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
