Roach, H.

…An American comedian from the silent film era, he is known as one of the three great comedy kings along with Chaplin and Keaton. Born as the son of a photographer in Birchardt, Nebraska, he started out as a supporting actor in a traveling theater company, then worked as an extra in a film, and eventually appeared in over 100 short comedies, including the Lonesome Luke film series, for Rollin Films, founded by fellow extra Hal Roach. He then created a new character with a style that was common in American cities at the time, consisting of a gray flannel suit, straw hat, and round glasses (later becoming his trademark, known as Lloyd glasses), and broke away from the image of being a Chaplin imitation. …
