Japanese: 本系帳 - ほんけいちょう

The ancient Imperial Court ordered each clan (uji) to write down their lineage, history, and deeds. From the Nara period onwards, in order to correct confusion and falsification in clan genealogies, the creation of official lineage registers was frequently ordered, beginning in Tenpyo-hoji 5 (761) as an early example and continuing through Enryaku 18 (799). No complete versions have been handed down, and we can only infer their original form from various records. A similar example is the clan text (ujibumi), which takes the form of text, whereas the official lineage register is in the form of charts.

古代朝廷が各氏 (うじ) に命じて，その系譜，由緒，事跡を書上げさせたもの。奈良時代以降，氏族の系譜の混乱や偽りを正すため，天平宝字5 (761) 年を早い例として，延暦 18 (799) 年以降しばしば本系帳の勘造が命じられた。完全な形のものは伝わっておらず，各種の記録から原形が推察できるだけである。同種のものに氏文 (うじぶみ) があるが，これは文章の形をとり，本系帳は図表の形式であった。
