Born: January 12, 1926, New York [Died] September 3, 1987. Buffalo. American composer. Studied composition under W. Rieger and S. Wolpe. In 1950, he met J. Cage and joined his group, the New York School. Moving away from the traditional structuring techniques of Western music, he focused on the resonance of the sound itself, and invented graphic notation in his series "Projections" from 1951. He also formed friendships with avant-garde painters such as P. Guston and M. Rothko, who greatly influenced him. His style is meditative, and many of his works have little change, with soft sounds playing throughout the gradual flow of time.
