Sagae [city] - Sagae
A city in central Yamagata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center developed on the alluvial fan of the Sagae River, a tributary of the Mogami River in the western part of the Yamagata Basin. During the Kamakura period, it became the property of the Oe clan, but during the Edo period, it became a tenryo (government territory) and a magistrate's office was established there. It is connected by the Aterazawa Line and the Yamagata Expressway, and is the commercial center of the surrounding rural areas. Food products, especially corned beef, are thriving, and the surrounding areas are rich in vegetables and fruit. Cherries are the largest production in the prefecture, and the cherry festival is famous. There is Sagae Onsen (alkaline spring, 44°C) and Jionji Temple, the head temple of the Jion sect. 139.03 km2 . Population 42,373 (2010).
