Volume 4, "The Tale of the Love-Glass and the Greengrocer," deals with the love between Oshichi, the daughter of a greengrocer in Hongo, Edo, and Kichisaburo, a temple page. Oshichi sets fire to a house out of her desire to see Kichisaburo, and is burned at the stake, and Kichisaburo becomes a monk.
