A canal in Ontario, Canada, connecting Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. It was built in 1829 because the Niagara River, which connects the two lakes, was unnavigable. It has undergone two major renovations, in 1887 and 1932, to reach its current size. With a total length of 44 km, widths of 61-94 m, and a depth of 9 m at its shallowest point, it plays an important role in connecting the Great Lakes in the center of North America with the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence River. Travel time through the canal is approximately eight hours. [Ohara Yuko] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
