A device that allows visual observation of a monochromatic solar image by placing the eye on the photographing part of a spectroheliograph. It was invented by GE Hale in 1924. The solar image is moved at high speed, and a monochromatic image of part of the solar disk can be seen due to the afterimage of the eye. A prismatic prism is placed in front of the first and second slits of the spectroheliograph and rotated. With one rotation of the prism, the part of the solar image that enters the prismatic prism moves back and forth four times. When a diffraction grating is used to shine light of a specified wavelength on the second slit, a solar image of that wavelength is produced on the second slit.
