This art museum is located in Munich. Its collection includes approximately 20,000 Western European paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries, of which over 1,000 are on permanent display. It was founded in 1836. King Maximilian I of Bavaria gathered together the collections of the Duke of Bavaria since the 16th century, which had been in the royal palace and villas, and opened them to the public. The building, built by order of King Ludwig I, was designed by the master of neoclassical architecture, Klenze. It was originally a royal museum, but is now owned by the state of Bavaria. The majority of the museum's collection is German paintings from the 15th and 16th centuries, primarily by Dürer and Altdorfer, but the collection is also extensive, including early Netherlandish paintings, 17th century Flemish and Dutch paintings by Rubens and others, as well as paintings from Italy, Spain, and France.

ミュンヘンにある美術館。所蔵作品は15～18世紀の西欧絵画約2万点。そのうち1000余点が常時展示されている。創設は1836年。バイエルン国王マクシミリアン1世が，それまで王宮や離宮にあった16世紀以来のバイエルン公の収集を一堂に集め一般公開したもので，ルートウィヒ1世の命により作られた建物は新古典主義建築の巨匠クレンツェの設計による。創建当初は王立，現在はバイエルン州立である。所蔵作品の中心を成すのは，デューラー，アルトドルファーを中心とする15～16世紀ドイツ絵画であるが，初期ネーデルラント絵画，ルーベンスをはじめとする17世紀フランドル･オランダ絵画，さらにはイタリア，スペイン，フランスの絵画など，収集の層は厚い。
