Hiuchigatake - Hiuchigatake

It is also called "Hiuchidake". Located in the southwest of Fukushima Prefecture, in Minamiaizu County, Hinoemata Village, it is the highest mountain north of Tohoku. It stands to the north of Ozenuma Lake on the border with Gunma Prefecture. It is based on Palaeozoic strata and granite, and on top of that is andesitic lava that erupted after the Quaternary Period. The mountain consists of four peaks: Shibayasugura (2,356 meters), Manaitagura (2,346 meters), Minobusa-dake, and Akanagure-dake, and in the middle of them is the cone-shaped central crater cone, Miike-dake. Ozenuma Lake and Ozegahara were created when the lava flow from Hiuchigatake dammed the upper reaches of the Tadami River. Due to the abundant snow remaining on the gentle slopes of the mountainside and foothills, there are numerous marshes called "Tashiro". There are also well-maintained hiking trails. For a long time, it was one of the main areas of Nikko National Park, but in August 2007, when the Oze area was separated from Nikko National Park and the new Oze National Park was established, it became part of the Oze National Park.

「燧岳(ひうちだけ)」ともいう。福島県南西部、南会津(みなみあいづ)郡檜枝岐村(ひのえまたむら)にある山で、東北以北の最高峰。群馬県境にある尾瀬沼(おぜぬま)の北にそびえる。古生層や花崗(かこう)岩類を基盤とし、その上に第四紀以降噴出した安山岩質溶岩がのる。山頂は柴安嵓(しばやすぐら)（2356メートル）、俎嵓(まないたぐら)（2346メートル）、ミノブサ岳、赤ナグレ岳の4峰からなり、そのほぼ中央に円錐(えんすい)形の中央火口丘御池(みいけ)岳がある。尾瀬沼や尾瀬ヶ原は、燧ヶ岳の溶岩流が只見川(ただみがわ)上流をせき止めてつくったものである。山腹、山麓(さんろく)の緩斜面には、豊富な残雪の影響で田代(たしろ)とよばれる湿原が無数に散在している。登山道も整備されている。長く日光国立公園の主要部の一つであったが、2007年（平成19）8月に、尾瀬地区が日光国立公園から分離して、新たに尾瀬国立公園が成立した際に、尾瀬国立公園域に入った。
