Finsen, Niels Ryberg
Born: December 15, 1860, Torshavn
Died: September 24, 1904. Copenhagen. Danish physician. His parents were Icelandic. He graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 1890. In 1893, he discovered that red light prevents the rash of smallpox patients from suppurating and leaves no scars, and announced his findings. He then discovered that ultraviolet light is responsible for the sterilizing effect of sunlight, and succeeded in using ultraviolet light to treat lupus vulgaris, a type of skin tuberculosis that is particularly prevalent in Northern Europe. He is known as the "father of modern phototherapy," and in 1996 he founded the Finsen Medical Phototherapy Institute (now the Finsen Institute) in Copenhagen. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1903 for his achievements in phototherapy for skin diseases.
