Richard Finsterwalder

1899‐1963
German photogrammetry expert and Central Asian explorer. Son of mathematician Sebastian (1862-1951). In 1939 he became a professor at the Technical University of Hannover, and in 1948 he became a professor at the Technical University of Munich. In 1928 he participated in a geodetic and topographical expedition to the Alai-Pamir. In 1934 he joined a German expedition led by W. Märkl, which aimed to be the first to reach the summit of Nanga Parbat. Although they failed to reach the summit, Finsterwalder circled the mountainside and surveyed the surrounding mountains, which resulted in the creation of a scientific map.

ドイツの写真測量学者，中央アジア探検家。数学者セバスティアン(1862‐1951)の子。1939年ハノーファー工科大学教授，48年ミュンヘン工科大学教授に転じた。1928年アライ･パミールの測地学的･地形学的探検に赴く。34年ナンガ･パルバット初登頂を目ざすW.メルクルらドイツ遠征隊に参加，登頂は失敗したが，フィンスターワルダーは山腹を一周し，周囲の山まで含めて測量して，科学的地図を作成する成果を得た。
