1899‐1963 German photogrammetry expert and Central Asian explorer. Son of mathematician Sebastian (1862-1951). In 1939 he became a professor at the Technical University of Hannover, and in 1948 he became a professor at the Technical University of Munich. In 1928 he participated in a geodetic and topographical expedition to the Alai-Pamir. In 1934 he joined a German expedition led by W. Märkl, which aimed to be the first to reach the summit of Nanga Parbat. Although they failed to reach the summit, Finsterwalder circled the mountainside and surveyed the surrounding mountains, which resulted in the creation of a scientific map.
