1599‐1667 Pope of the Roman Empire. Reigned 1655-67. Born in Siena, he was ordained in Rome in 1626, and served briefly as the Inquisitor of Malta. In 1639 he became the Papal legate in Cologne, where he mediated the conclusion of the Treaty of Westphalia. In 1652 he became Secretary of State for the Holy See. As Pope, he helped Louis XIV suppress Jansenism by condemning Jansen's Five Theses in 1656, but he was critical of the lax moral theology of the Jesuits and the Gallicanism of the French clergy.
