Kalmar Union - Kalmar Union

Japanese: カルマル同盟 - カルマルどうめい(英語表記)Kalmar-unionen; Kalmar Union
Kalmar Union - Kalmar Union
The union of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway was formed in Kalmar, Sweden in 1397. At the time, the royal families of the three countries were closely related by marriage, and the nobles had considerable power to influence the royal families. However, Princess Margrethe of Denmark married King Haakon VI of Norway, and after the deaths of her father, husband, and son, she became queen of both countries and wielded real power. She was welcomed by the nobles who had rebelled against King Albert of Sweden, and became the de facto ruler of Sweden. In 1397, she gathered the powerful nobles of the three countries in Kalmar to form a personal union, making her sister's grandson Eric of Pommers king, and herself regent, effectively holding real power. The union collapsed in 1523 when Sweden, which chose Gustav I (Gustav I) as king, separated from Norway and became independent. The union of Norway and Denmark lasted until 1814.
