Japanese: 自然と人生 - しぜんとじんせい

A collection of short essays by Tokutomi Roka. Published in 1900. Having gained fame as a writer with the great success of "Hototogisu", Tokutomi compiled the prose he had been writing since he joined Minyusha in 1889. The contents are a variety of works, including novels, critical biographies, and 87 prose poems, but of the three parts of prose poems, "Shonan Essays" is the best known. The detailed notes on nature are permeated with concise Chinese expressions and a fragrant romanticism, further increasing the author's acclaim.

徳冨蘆花の随筆小品集。1900年刊。『不如帰』の大成功により文名を高めた徳冨が，1889年に民友社に入社した当時から書きためた散文をまとめたもの。内容は小説，評伝，散文詩 87編など種々雑多だが，3部に分けた散文詩中『湘南随筆』が最も知られる。自然描写の克明なノートが簡潔な漢語表現と香り高いロマン性によって貫かれ，作者の評価をいっそう高めるものとなった。
