A ball where people wear masks or unusual costumes. It is also called a masquerade party. It originated from ancient folk and religious festivals, and from ancient Greek and Roman actors who appeared on stage wearing masks or animal heads. It flourished in Italy in the 15th century, and was introduced to France by Catherine de' Medici, who married Prince Henry (later Henry II) in 1533. There, it was called mascarade and became the origin of court ballet. Several people formed groups and performed their favorite dances, but later it changed to ballet-style dances based on fables and historical stories. In Japan, the first one was held in 1887 (Meiji 20) at the Prime Minister's official residence, hosted by Ito Hirobumi.
