Competitive Games

…It started as a school event. It was first held in 1874 at the Naval Academy under the guidance of a British instructor as a “competitive games meet.” In 1878, a “strength-training meet” was held at Sapporo Agricultural College (the predecessor to Hokkaido University), and in 1885, an “athletic meet” was held at the University of Tokyo. At first, the nature of athletic meets was not consistent, and they included track and field events such as foot races with entertainment elements such as three-legged races, sports competitions and sports clubs that focused on track and field events, and even athletic meetings such as political rallies and lantern processions, such as the “Soshi Athletic Meet” and the “Torch Procession Athletic Meet.” …
