A family of Italian violin makers. The founder was Andrea G. (c. 1626-98), who was born in Cremona and studied under Nicola Amati there. For generations, the family had a workshop in Cremona. Of Andrea's sons, Pietro Giovanni G. (1655-1720) worked at the court of Mantua, and his younger brother Giuseppe Giovanni Battista G. (c. 1666-1740) took over his father's workshop. Of the latter's sons, Pietro G. (1695-1762) was active in Venice, and his younger brother Giuseppe G. (1698-1744) became the family's greatest violin maker. Giuseppe's instruments, known as "del Gesu", are considered to be on a par with those of Stradivari and were used by Paganini as well as many of the great violinists of the 20th century, whose instruments were labelled with the name Guarnerius. なお、彼らの製品のラベルにはGuarnerius(グアルネリウス)と記されている。
