1908‐90 Costa Rican politician. He served as president of the country from 1953 to 1958 and promoted a center-left policy. He nationalized the banks and increased the percentage of the United Fruit Company's profits paid to the country from 10% to 30%. After being re-elected in 1970, he opposed the Organization of American States' policy of containment of Cuba and promoted a policy of friendship with the socialist countries.
