A town in the province of Terni in Umbria, central Italy. It is located about 100 km north-northwest of Rome. There is a 195m-high rocky mountain on the plain, the summit of which can be reached by a cable car. Founded by the Etruscans, it was the center of the County of Lombardy in the Middle Ages, and became a Papal State in 1157. There is a 13th-century palace and the Orvieto Cathedral, and two other Gothic buildings are nearby. Sant'Andrea and San Giovenare are Romanesque churches built in the 11th to 13th centuries. There are railroads and roads leading to Rome and Florence. Pottery and lacemaking are thriving in the town, and Orvieto wine is famous as a white wine. Population 21,362 (1991 estimate).
