A city located deep in Cook Inlet in southern Alaska, USA. The largest city in Alaska. It has an international airport. Its origins date back to 1914, when it was the starting point of the Alaska Railroad to Fairbanks. During World War II, it was an army and air force base, and later became a key location on the air route through the North Pacific and the Arctic. It is a distribution center for agricultural and mineral products, and its economy is based on military demand and oil production. Tourism is also important. It is home to the University of Alaska (founded in 1954) and Alaska Pacific University (founded in 1957). It was damaged by the Alaska earthquake that occurred in March 1964.
