Humans first learned to use metals when they discovered gold dust (native gold), native copper, and meteorites. They then learned to obtain metals by burning charcoal to melt the raw ores, but this required blowing in large amounts of air to supply oxygen and raise the temperature. To do this, methods were devised using leather bags, fans, and blowpipes to blow large amounts of air at once. In Japan, the process of smelting metals has long been referred to as "blowing gold," which is probably an accurate description of the process.
