A Russian female revolutionary and social activist. Born into an aristocratic family serving as a forestry inspector, she married in 1870. She studied at the medical school of the University of Zurich with her husband and her sister Lizia, but was influenced by her friends and sister to join the revolutionary movement. She returned to Russia in 1875 and worked among the peasants as an assistant doctor in a village. When the revolutionary organization "People's Will" was formed in 1879, she joined its executive committee. She supported the assassination of Emperor Alexander II in 1881, claiming to overthrow the monarchy through terrorist activities and establish socialism. She was arrested in 1883 and sentenced to death, but her sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and she lived in solitary confinement until 1904. After spending some time in her hometown after her release, she left the country in 1906 and joined the revolutionary Socialist Party (SR). When the betrayal of party leader Azev came to light in 1908, she withdrew from politics, began a campaign to rescue political prisoners, and returned to Russia in 1915. After the 1917 revolution, he supported the movement to rescue political prisoners under the Soviet regime. He left behind many memoirs, including the two volumes of Unforgettable Things (1921-1922).

ロシアの女性革命家，社会運動家。森林監督官をつとめる貴族の家に生まれ，1870年に結婚。夫と妹リジアとともにチューリヒ大学医学部に留学するが，友人や妹の影響で革命運動に志し，1875年帰国，村の補助医として農民工作を行う。1879年革命組織〈人民の意志〉派が結成されると，その執行委員会に参加。テロ活動により帝政を打倒，社会主義の樹立を目指すという主張のもとで，1881年皇帝アレクサンドル２世の暗殺に荷担した。1883年逮捕され死刑を宣告されるが，終身刑に減刑されて1904年まで独房生活を送った。釈放後しばらく郷里で過ごした後，1906年国外に出て，革命政党エス・エル党に入る。1908年に党幹部アゼフの裏切りが明らかになると政治から身を引き，政治犯の救援運動を始め，1915年に帰国。1917年の革命後もソビエト政権下の政治犯救援運動を支援した。《忘れえぬことども》２巻（1921年−1922年）など回想録を多く残している。
