Review book - hyousho (English spelling) píng shū
Chinese storytelling. Its founder was Liu Jingting (1587-1670?). Hyosho is the name used in the north, Hubei, and Sichuan. In Jiangnan and Fuzhou, it is called Hyowa. There are differences in style, language, and presentation methods, but they all share the use of folding fans, hand towels, and pieces of wood (sometimes jade) called 'Sakigi'. The stories include dynasty stories such as "Three Kingdoms" and "Western Han", battle stories such as "Yue Fei" and "Ying Lie", green forest stories such as "Shui Hu" and "Seven Heroes and Five Elements", and gods and monsters stories such as "Journey to the West", "Strange Tales from Liaozhai", and "Jigong Biography". Originally, there were stories taught by masters and those based on printed texts, but many of the masters belonged to the former school, and formed a school of reading "Three Kingdoms" and narrating "Shui Hu".
