During the Edo period, this was the title of a position responsible for inspecting, appraising, and copying foreign paintings, including those from China, that were imported through Nagasaki. The first person to hold this title was Watanabe Shuseki around 1697, and the Hirowatari, Ishizaki, and Araki families joined, and the position was passed down to these four families, all of whom lived in Nagasaki.
