Góis, Damião de
[Born] February 2, 1502, Alencale
Died January 30, 1574. Alenquer. Portuguese humanist and chronicler. He travelled to various parts of Europe as a diplomatic envoy, and from 1533, thanks to the favor of Erasmus, he devoted himself to learning. He studied in Padua from 1534 to 1538, acquiring encyclopedic knowledge and meeting P. Bembo and others. In 1548, he was appointed director of the National Archives, and ten years later, he was commissioned to write the official chronicles. These were the Chronicle of Manuel the Fortunate (Crónica Felicíssimo Rei do D. Manuel) (1566-67) and the Chronicle of Prince João (Crónica do Príncipe D. João) (Crónica do Príncipe D. João) (1567). His faithfulness to historical facts made him many enemies, which led to persecution by the Inquisition.
