The name means "Japanese shop" in Indonesian and refers to the stores set up by Japanese people who engaged in various commercial activities in various parts of the Dutch East Indies before World War II, but by extension it is often used to include all such Japanese people. Such commercial activities began after the Russo-Japanese War, and people who had accumulated a small amount of capital by selling medicines and general goods in the early days set up stores selling china, clothing, and various other goods. The number of such stores increased after World War I, and Japanese companies also flourished, with some even operating department stores.
