A family of fish in the order Perciformes. The body is elongated and cylindrical, with a thin and pointed head. The lower jaw protrudes from the upper jaw, and both jaws have sharp teeth. There are two dorsal fins that are clearly separated. It is a carnivore, preying on small fish. It is found in warm seas around the world, swimming in the surface waters along the coast. In Japan, it is found from central Honshu southward, and is often found in the red barracuda Sphyraena pinguis and the Japanese barracuda S. japonica . The flesh is white and light, slightly watery, but delicious. It is grilled with salt or dried. The red barracuda in autumn is considered the best. The largest of the barracudas, the great barracuda S. barracuda, can reach a total length of about 2m and sometimes attacks humans. It is also called the poison barracuda, and large fish can contain ciguatera toxin and are not edible. It is found in tropical and subtropical regions around the world except the eastern Pacific Ocean, and in Japan it is found in southern Japan.
