Wooden stupa - Kyogitoba

...Mochizuki Nobuyuki's "Encyclopedia of Buddhism" says that it is "also called bamboo stupa, thin stupa, or mokkan shakyo." Both bamboo stupa and thin stupa are pronounced "sasatoba," but nowadays they are often called wooden stupas or water stupas. They are mainly seen in the Kansai region, and have a five-ring-shaped inscription on the top, a sutra or Buddhist name written on them, and are immersed in water or washed away with prayers for the deceased's soul....

From [Stupa]

...Etymologically, it is a Chinese translation of stupa, a pagoda containing the remains of Shakyamuni Buddha, and in a broad sense it can refer to towers such as three-story, five-story, and thirteen-story pagodas, as well as five-ringed stone pagodas, but the meaning of sotoba in general today refers to wooden stupas. Wooden sotoba can be classified into square stupas, wooden stupas, and hegi stupas. Square stupas are mainly square stupas, and are used as grave markers at burials, or as memorial towers for temple openings, memorial services for the relocation of the Buddha, goma ceremonies, Segaki (gaki) ceremonies, and Nagare Kanjo (flowing kanjo) ceremonies. ...
