Wooden stupa - Kyogitoba

...Mochizuki Nobuyuki's "Encyclopedia of Buddhism" says that it is "also called bamboo stupa, thin stupa, or mokkan shakyo." Both bamboo stupa and thin stupa are pronounced "sasatoba," but nowadays they are often called wooden stupas or water stupas. From [Stupa]

Wooden sotoba can be classified into square stupas, wooden stupas, and hegi stupas. Square stupas are mainly square stupas, and are used as grave markers at burials, or as memorial towers for temple openings, memorial services for the relocation of the Buddha, goma ceremonies, Segaki (gaki) ceremonies, and Nagare Kanjo (flowing kanjo) ceremonies. ...
