A city on the eastern coast of Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. During the Edo period, the central city was a base port for Owari merchant ships, and trade with Edo was thriving. It has long been known for fermented foods (sake, vinegar, miso, soy sauce), and there are many cotton textile factories in the Narawa and Otogawa areas. After World War II, heavy chemical industries such as steel, transportation equipment, and metals developed, and it is the center of the Kinuura coastal industrial area. The western part is a recipient of Aichi Irrigation Water, and vegetable and fruit cultivation is thriving. The Taketoyo Line and Meitetsu Kowa Line run through the city, and it is connected to Takahama City, across from Kinuura Port, by the Kinuura Bridge, and to Hekinan City by the Kinuura Tunnel. It has an area of 47.42 ^km2 . Population: 118,828 (2010).

愛知県知多半島東岸を占める市。1937年市制。中心市街は江戸時代の尾張商船の拠点港で，江戸との取引が盛んであった。古くから醸造食品（清酒，食酢，みそ，醤油）で知られ，成岩(ならわ)・乙川(おとがわ)地区には綿織物工場も多い。第２次世界大戦後は鉄鋼，輸送用機器，金属など重化学工業も発達し，衣浦(きぬうら)臨海工業地域の中心をなす。西部は愛知用水の受給地で，野菜・果樹栽培が盛ん。武豊線，名鉄河和(こうわ)線が通じ，衣浦港対岸の高浜市と衣浦大橋，碧南(へきなん)市と衣浦トンネルで結ばれる。47.42km²。11万8828人（2010）。
