viola

Japanese:
viola
A bowed string instrument of the violin family. It is also called the alto in French. It is tuned a perfect fifth lower than the violin and plays the inner voice (alto) in ensembles. Its shape and playing technique are almost the same as the violin, but the bow is slightly shorter. It is characterized by a duller, more mellow tone than the violin. For a long time it was considered a modest instrument for ensembles, but since the success of Primrose, attention has also been paid to its potential as a solo instrument. In recent years, virtuoso performers such as Bashmet, K. Kashkasyan (1954-), T. Zimmermann (1966-), and Japan's Nobuko Imai (1943-) have produced many solo pieces and concertos. The terms viola and viol are also used as general terms for bowed string instruments from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period. → Amati/Stradivari → Related topics Cello | Viola d'amore

viola

American video artist. Born in New York. Since the 1970s, he has been presenting video works and sound installations. He has also documented and conducted fieldwork on the traditional ethnic cultures of the South Pacific, Asia, and Africa, and has constructed a stream of contemplative and poetic images by skillfully interweaving common phases that underlie various cultures and weaving in primordial metaphors of the contrast between life and death, and between civilization and nature. His representative works include Chot el Jerid - Portrait of Light and Heat (1978), Room of St. John of the Cross (1983), and Triptych of Nantes (1992). →Video Art
