Ochanomizu - Ochanomizu

A Kyogen piece title. Kyogen about monks, Shinbochimono. "Ochanomizu" is the title of the piece in the Okura school, and "Mizukumi" in the Izumi school. The head priest of the temple orders Shinbochi (a shite, a person who has recently become a monk) to fetch water from a spring in the fields, but he refuses, so Icha (a young woman's common name) in front of the temple does it instead. As Icha fetches water, distracting herself from the loneliness of the evening with a short song, Shinbochi, who has followed her, takes the girl's sleeve and sings her love. The girl scolds her, but they continue to fetch water together while chanting. The head priest comes to pick her up and chastises Shinbochi, but Icha sympathizes with her and the two of them defeat the head priest and enter the temple. The above is the story of the Okura school. In the Izumi school, when Icha is washing the dishes, Shinhoki comes and asks her to draw water for tea. She sings a short song and expresses her affection for him, but Icha puts a bucket of water over Shinhoki's head and leaves. The head priest does not appear. This is a lyrical piece that focuses on the exchange of short songs.

狂言の曲名。出家狂言、新発意物(しんぼちもの)。『御茶の水』は大蔵(おおくら)流の曲名で、和泉(いずみ)流では『水汲(みずくみ)』。寺の住持が新発意（シテ。出家してまもない者）に野中(のなか)の清水で水を汲(く)んでこいと命ずるが承知しないので、かわりに門前のいちゃ（若い女の通名）をやる。いちゃが夕暮れ時の寂しさを小歌にまぎらしながら水を汲んでいると、あとを追ってきた新発意が恋心を謡(うたい)にこめて娘の袖(そで)をとる。娘はたしなめるが、なお謡い交わしながらともに水を汲み入れる。迎えにきた住持がこのようすを見て新発意を折檻(せっかん)すると、いちゃは新発意に同情し、2人で住持を倒し入っていく。以上は大蔵流の筋である。和泉流では、いちゃが濯(すす)ぎ物をしているところへ新発意がきて、お茶の水を汲んでほしいと頼み、小歌を謡って慕い寄るが、いちゃは水の入った桶(おけ)を新発意の頭にかぶせ去っていくという筋で、住持は出ない。小歌のやりとりを中心とする叙情的な曲。
