...For example, it has been reported that at least eight pairs of genes for plant height differ between a Chinese wheat variety and an American variety that is 8 cm taller. When differences in a trait are determined by a large number of alleles whose individual effects are small, the trait is called a quantitative trait, and the group of genes that determine it is called a polygene. Many of the traits that have contributed to the evolution of organisms in nature, the domestication of animals under human control, and the domestication of plants are quantitative traits controlled by polygenes, but their inheritance patterns are essentially the same as those of traits studied by Mendel.
