Tadahiko Iida

Japanese: 飯田忠彦 - いいだただひこ
Tadahiko Iida

A historian and patriot in the late Edo period. Born on December 18, 1281 (Kansei 10), as the son of Satomi Yoshijuro, a samurai of Tokuyama Domain in Suo Province (Yamaguchi Prefecture), he was later adopted by Iida Kensuke, a local samurai of Yao, Kawachi Province (Osaka Prefecture). He was commonly known as Yojin, Ogabu, and later Samon. His pen name was Shikuni, and his pen names included Ebisuhama Tsuyoshi, Kanzan, and Mokusou. At the age of 16, he was deeply moved after reading Dai Nihonshi (The History of Japan), and aspired to compile a sequel to it. It took him 38 years to complete the 291-volume Noshi (No History) on his own in 1851 (Kaei 4). He also served the Arisugawanomiya family, often writing to them about the times and interacting with patriots. In 1858 (Ansei 5), he was implicated in the Ansei Purge and received a suspension, and after serving his sentence, he retired to Kyoto in 1860 (Man'en 1). During this time, he was investigated in relation to the Sakuradamon Incident, and committed suicide in a fit of anger and grief.
