974‐1028 Founder of the Ly dynasty in Vietnam (reigned 1009-28). Also known as Taizu. Born in what is now Ha Bac Province. Said to be the son of his mother Pham and a divine being. He studied at a Buddhist temple and served under Emperor Zhongzong of the former Le dynasty. During the reign of Emperor Le Long Dinh, he was promoted to commander in chief in the palace and took control of the military. After Dinh's death in 1009, he ascended to the throne himself and took the era name Shunten. In the 10th year, he named Thang Long (Rising Dragon) as Thang Long (Ascending Dragon) as the capital of Hoa Lu Fortress, which had previously been the capital of both the Dinh and former Le dynasties, because it was too narrow.
