...The Basques were first recorded in history when they assisted the Romans in their invasion of the Iberian Peninsula and their attack on the Cantabrians (1st century BC). The Romans controlled only the southern parts of Navarre and Alava, but did not extend to the coastal region of Cantabria. In the 5th century, the Basques resisted the Germanic peoples' passage through the Pyrenees, but were eventually subjugated by the Visigoths (7th century).
