This was one of Emperor Goshirakawa's temples, located in what is now Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. It was built in part of the Hojujiden temple in the Emperor's Imperial Palace, and was built for his consort Kenshunmon'in Taira Shigeko and her son Emperor Takakura. A dedication ceremony was held in 1173 (Joan 3), and it was an extremely lavish temple, but it suffered a major fire on June 4, 1226 (Karoku 2), and thereafter fell into a steady decline. On March 18, 1326 (Kareki 1), Emperor Go-Daigo donated the temple and its estates to Toji Temple, and thereafter, the Fudan Komyo Shingon chanting was practiced at Toji Temple's Goei-do Hall on the anniversaries of the deaths of Kenshunmon'in and Takakura'in.
