Biomekhanika (English spelling)

Japanese: ビオメハニカ（英語表記）Biomekhanika

Also known as biomechanical or anthropodynamic theatre, this is an acting system invented by the Soviet director VE Meyerhold in the 1920s. Meyerhold criticised the Moscow Art Theatre, which he helped found, for its bias towards realism that placed emphasis on psychological depiction and words, and aimed for powerful theatrical expression through dynamic movements that emphasized the rhythm of the actors' bodies. However, because his style was too innovative, he was purged around 1938, like many of the avant-garde activists of the time.
