A city in eastern Washington, USA, near the Idaho border. Population 195,629 (2000). It is the commercial and industrial center of the "Inland Empire" region of the northwestern United States, rich in agricultural, livestock, and mineral resources, and a key transportation hub. In addition to being a distribution center and market for a wide variety of agricultural products, it is also important as a source of lumber and various minerals that are used as industrial raw materials, and food processing, flour milling, oil refining, machinery, and lumber are the core of the city's industries. With the completion of Grand Coulee Dam in 1942, it also became a center of the light metal industry, producing aluminum, magnesium, and other materials during World War II. It is also a starting point for nearby lakes and national parks, and tourism is thriving. The city's name is an indigenous (American Indian) word meaning "child of the sun."
