Steatornis caripensis; oilbird

Steatornis caripensis; oilbird
Order: Nightjars, Family: Acanthariidae. Total length: 40-49cm. Overall color: reddish brown, with thin stripes on the tail and wings, and white spots on the head, chest, abdomen, and wings. Its legs are small and it can barely walk, only clinging to things. It is nocturnal, staying in caves during the day to build nests. At night, it flies out into the forest to pick oily fruits such as palms. It was named after the fact that it used to eat these fruits and catch plump chicks to extract oil from them. In the darkness of the cave, it makes a short, high-pitched call, and listens to the echoes to identify obstacles and determine the direction to fly. It is found from western Panama to northern South America and Trinidad and Tobago.
