High explosives are used primarily for military purposes and are used in shells, bombs, torpedoes, rocket warheads, nuclear weapons, etc. Their performance requires high power per unit volume or weight, high detonation velocity, good storage stability, and low sensitivity to impact. Typical military explosives include picric acid, ammonium picrate (Explosive D), trinitrotoluene (TNT), pentitol (PETN), tetryl, hexogen (RDX), octogen (HMX), and mixtures of these.
