A city in the mid-west of Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1889 and is the prefectural capital. It faces the Sea of Japan and occupies the alluvial plains at the mouths of the Shinano and Agano rivers. The central city at the mouth of the Shinano River developed as a port of call for ships transporting rice to Oshu since 1672. In 1868, it was designated an open port, and has since developed as the largest city in the Hokuriku region. It is served by the Joetsu Shinkansen, Shinetsu Main Line, Echigo Line, Hakushin Line, Uetsu Main Line, Ban'etsu West Line, Hokuriku Expressway, Ban'etsu Expressway, Sado Route, and National Route 8. Industries such as petroleum, metals, chemicals, machinery, lumber, and paper are carried out, and the total value of manufactured goods shipped was approximately 885.2 billion yen (2003), making it the largest in the prefecture. The Niigata gas field boasts abundant reserves, but extraction is restricted due to subsidence. Niigata Port at the mouth of the Shinano River is a large industrial port designated as a specific important port, and the entire northeast coast is a coastal industrial district. The fishing industry is also thriving, with fishing grounds around Sado. Niigata University, Hakusan Park, Niigata Park, and Niigata Airport are located on the west bank of the Agano River estuary, and international flights to Russia, Korea, and China are also available. Niigata Stadium (Tohoku Electric Power Big Swan), a soccer World Cup venue, is located on the shores of Toyano Lagoon. In 1964, Niigata was designated a new industrial city, but in June of the same year, the reclaimed land on the old Shinano River suffered severe damage due to the soft ground in the Niigata earthquake. In May 1999, Sagata was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. In January 2001, Kurosaki Town, Nishikanbara County, was incorporated. In March 2005, Niitsu City, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Kosudo Town, Yokogoshi Town, Kameda Town, Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village in Nishikanbara County were incorporated, and in October 2005, Maki Town, Nishikanbara County, was incorporated. In April 2007, it became a city designated by government ordinance. It has eight wards: Kita-ku, Higashi-ku, Chuo-ku, Konan-ku, Akiba-ku, Minami-ku, Nishi-ku, and Nishikan-ku. It has an area of 726.45 km2 and a population of 811,901 (2010). → Related topics Niigata Prefecture | Niigata University | Nuttari | Hakushin Line Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
